Alaska Crab Fishing
Crab Fishing in Alaska!
In Alaska, you don't really go fishing for crab using traditional means of rod and reel. You actually place baited crab pots which are cages or traps that allow the crabs to enter but prevent them from escaping. The crab pots are strategically placed in areas where the crab are known to populate or travel. In SE Alaska, near Prince of Wales Island, you will not find the larger crab boats that you will find up in the north. The pots used are generally smaller than the larger commercial crab pots, and the species found and caught in SE Alaska are different than you will find in the Bering Sea.
Native crab species found in SE Alaska include the Dungeness Crab, Tanner Crab, Red & Blue King Crab, and Golden (Brown) & Blue King Crab. Their habits, season and distribution vary, so it is necessary to do some research if this is something you wish to do. KH Charters can make arrangements if you would like to add crab fishing in Alaska to your trip.
